Bad Animal is a used and rare bookshop, a natural wine bar, and a Thai restaurant, all living in the same space in downtown Santa Cruz. The menu rotates seasonally and changes often, so what you get one visit might be different the next. That is part of the appeal.
We ordered almost the entire spring 2026 menu. Here is what stood out.
The Asian NY steak and the mushroom pasta were both incredible. The kind of dishes you think about after you leave.
The squash was the real sleeper. We did not know squash could taste like that.
